Lu’lur is the luxurious ritual originating from the Royal Palaces of central Java given to the Princess for 40 days prior to her wedding day. The term Lu’lur loosely translates to the Javanese “coating of the skin”. 

Those 40 days are a time of sharing wisdom handed down from each generation. During this gathering, the women honour being women and what it means to be getting married and walking the path of sharing your life with another being. In completing this Lu’lur ritual for 40 days the bride is hopefully not only ready for her wedding day looking beautiful and relaxed she is also at her most fertile ready to bear the children she is hopefully to have. 

The traditional Lu’lur treatment was as much about beauty as it was fertility, with the 40 day ritual including Jamu (herbal medicine) to invoke health and fertility. Although this ritual is promoted for women, it is important to remember that men were also honoured with traditional cleansing treatments and the drinking of Jamu for health and virility. In today’s world, very few even in Bali, have time for the 40 day Lu’lur ritual, however this treatment is still given over a 7 day period and the wonderful soul searching traditions that connect the mind, body and soul to the universes are still very much alive….
